Many
iPhone 6s/7/8/XS Max users are facing issue in playing recorded voice memos
after iOS 12 upgrade. When you will press play to voice memo it won’t play on
iPhone and sometimes switches to pause mode immediately or sometimes the
voice memo stays stuck for minutes and won’t play at all on iPhone with iOS
12/12.1/12.3 installed in it. It seems that all the voice memo are corrupted
and will not play in the iPhone. When recorded a new voice memo it will play
fine once and but when opened up later the voice memo does not play in iPhone. While some other iPhone users report that the long voice memo won't play in iOS 12.

Restarting
or resetting the iPhone is not helping out in playing voice memo on the iPhone.
As a workaround when test with transferring the voice memo file(.m4a) to
macbook and played there the voice memo still won’t play. The issue is occurring
when iPhone users opted for an iOS update or upgraded their iPhone to new
models like iPhone XR, XS. This is pain for many users as this has caused
corruption of some important recording like interview etc for many of the
iPhone user and they can’t play the voice memo recording anymore after the
update. “Voice Memos not playing back” seems to occur more frequent with iOS 12
updates and surely a software glitch that Apple should address soon and release
a permanent fix for the issue.
One iPhone user faced the issue after upgrading the iPhone X to XS :

memos are important to me. I can see
them all, but there appears to be nothing there. This was discovered on a device update from
iphone X to iphone XS. After backing up
the X to my pc and icloud the voice memos became silent on the X and could not
be migrated to the XS.”
How to fix iPhone 6s/7/8 Plus/XR/XS Max Voice memo not playing on iOS 12:
Fix 1: Resync voice memo
from iCloud
Go to
Settings > iCloud and check if you have sync for Voice Memos enabled. If
yes, make sure that you have good Wi-Fi connection and try to play it one more
time. If this won't help, create a new memo wile connected to Wi-Fi and try to
play it, this should trigger download of old memos fro the cloud.
Fix 2 : Install the backup
again
For
many iPhone users the back up did not load properly on the new iPhone or new version
of iOS 12. Thus if you have latest backup stored in iCloud or iTunes it is recommended
to reinstall the backup again on the iPhone and check of the voice memo plays
fine after this.
Fix 3: Reinstall the app
If voice memos are not playing back in voice
memo app first try uninstalling and reinstalling the app
-Hold
your finger on an app gently.
-When
all the apps wiggle, tap the X on the Voice Memo app.
-Download
the app from the App Store.
-Check
if the voice memo are working now or not
