Unable to save PDF form data “You cannot save data typed in this form”


Many people are facing issue in saving PDF files which allow them to edit the fields created in PDF forms. The users can edit the PDF but unable to save the new data. In fact the PDF viewer itself (as depicted in pics) gives a warning that the “Please fill out the following form. You cannot save data typed in this form . Please print your complete form if you would like copy for your records”.

Many users are getting confused on how to  enable saving of filled-in fields on PDF form. There does not seems to be a direct way to bypass the restriction to save the PDF form data in the file. If you try to save and close the file, next time you will open the file you won’t see any of the changes you have made. This is annoying for users and all the data typed gets lost.

Solution 1: Use Chrome to edit and save PDF form

Open your PDF in Google Chrome. Edit the PDF as you want. Hit ctrl + p. Now rather than choosing printer;  Save as PDF to your desktop/any folder. The PDF file saved will have complete data now.  Please note that the PDF you get will save the filled info but will not have fillable forms anymore.

Solution 2 : enable usage rights

For Acrobat 8, or 9 users, select "enable usage rights" from the Advanced menu. This will add about 20 kb to the pdf. The other possibility is to use CutePDF Pro, add a submit button and have the XFDF data submitted to your self as an email or to a web server. The XFDF data can then reload the original PDF with your data.


Solution 3 : Save as Reader Extended PDF

In Acrobat XI, (Close Form Editing if open) File > Save As Other > Reader Extended PDF > Enable Additional Features
