How to fix Siri says uh-huh, Um-hmm instead of Yes.

How to fix Siri says uh-huh, Um-hmm instead of Yes.

iPhone 11 Pro Max/ XS Max /XR/7/8 Plus user are finding issue with Siri that When waking Siri with ‘Hey Siri’ the Siri is saying uhhuh or Mmmmm instead of saying YES. The issue started to happen after iOS 13 update and before that Siri always used to say Yes or NO, but after the update Siri replies with Uh-Huh and Um-Hmm.
The uhhuh like response from Siri is annoying as Siri sounds uneducated and impolite with her responses.

Hey Siri saying uh-huh, um-hmmm

Siri is surely one of the best voice assistant and famous for its unique and best interactive responses. The Siri software is continuously under development in accordance with human behavior and expectations. So the Apple is trying to make with new responses like uh-huh to make Siri more Human and easier to interact with. But if so is the case a more casual option to control siri response will be much better option. “Uh-huh” and “Um-hmm”, these responses make the app disrespectful and should be only optional.

How to stop Siri from saying uh-huh or um-hmm on iPhone XR/11 Pro Max/ XS Max/ 8/7 Plus :

Fix : Ask Siri to stop it
One of the easiest way to fix the issue is to ask Siri to stop using uhhuh or hmmm responses, just simply as "Hey Siri. Can you please stop saying uh-huh" and for me the response was something along the lines of "Okay" or "I'll stop it." And after the Siri is not responding with uh-huh but using Okay, Yes, No etc.. back to normal.

Fix : Change Siri language
Please try to use some other version of English language, apparently not all version of Siri are using uhhuh. For example change  Siri from an American female to a South American male, this will stop Siri from responding with uhuh umhmm etc..

How to change Siri language
1.    On your iPhone ->Tap the “Settings” icon.
2.   In the “Settings” menu, tap the “Siri & Search” menu item.
3.   To change Siri's language, tap the “Language” menu item.

4.   On the “Language” menu, chose the language .

Fix 3: Update the iOS to latest version
Apple keeps on making changing in their iOS software, and possibly after getting enough feedback from users it may change the Siri default behavior as well. Therefore we recommend you always updating iOS.

iPhone becomes more annoying with each upgrade. First jack disappears then home button; now this. I am not impressed by having spider eyes on back of my phone. It’s a phone not a camera. Apple remember the KISS principle - Keep It Simple Stupid.

At last an answer I was looking for, thank you so much worked perfectly to get rid of that awful uhh and hmm.

i just get "There's nothing playing" when i asked it to stop saying uh-huh.

I’m glad I am not the only one who finds Siri’s “uh huh” to be annoying. I tried asking Siri to stop but they now say they do not understand the question :(

I'm absolutely beyond irritated with the Siri grunting uh-huh instead of responding on a normal manner. What made Apple think this was acceptable? I just put in a complaint with a rep. And unfortunately, your solutions did not work for me and the rep says there is no way to change it. I didn't pay this much for a phone to have it grunt at me.

Thank you for this easy fix to a small, but *wildly* irritating problem. πŸ™ƒπŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌ

A simple solution to all of this would be for Apple to give us the ability to create our own responses that we would like Siri to say back to us. A list of 5 or so greetings such as “Hey (your name), what’s up. Good morning (afternoon or evening)( your name), etc to be used randomly would be great.

I too am extremely irritated with Siri's uh huh response. It's so rude. If anyone finds a solution to change it, please post the solution.

It is so odd. I cannot stop it. I can imagine a generation of English speakers who believe barking noises is acceptable. I see it on Netflix. Very well. It no doubt happened to the Romans after the Goths arrived. But why not just provide *basic* functionality to allow for *editing* Siri responses? That would be massively appealing to *both* Romans & Goths or *any* member of a marketing focus group.

It is so odd. I cannot alter Siri responses.

The phone can learn to fly my drone but it cannot learn to be polite.

Obviously I earnestly wish my phone to sound like Jeeves. To me that is as natural as the desire to breath air. It ought to be default.

But life is never like that. There are always surprises. I understand the Goths got into Rome & made things interesting. They had a good time. I like that. When people grunt at me I grunt back at them with a smile.

But why not just provide basic response editing functionality? I can see the Siri text scrolling away. It could be done.

There are just not enough Wodehouse readers left.

What a relief, I was able to stop this by changing to a different English as suggested. With English Indian voice Siri responds with the old “doo doo” sound. I prefer this.

Does not work for me, I still the same bitchy / teenage attitude Siri!

I too am so annoyed by Siri responding with "um hum" or just "hum" it's awful. I've tried to change it to other voices and so far they're all doing it. I also asked Siri to stop saying "um hum" and to stop saying "um" and it said there is nothing to stop here. Extremely frustrating.

This didn’t work for me either, hearing that is instant madness !

What are all these people talking about? I absolutely *love* Siri's "uhum" responses. It feels so much more like a human as opposed to a software/robot. It baffles me that such a nice little touch has irritated some people. I think Apple was genius to put it in iOS. Then again, if some people don't like it for whatever reason, I think they should be able to disable it. But remember that many people actually like this.

The uh huh and uhum are very annoying to me and rude sounding. Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately it did not work for me but I have iPhone 13 and that could be the reason. I also called to see if it could be changed and I was informed that it could not and that I was not the first customer to call and complain. The rep did send my suggestion over to change that setting and allow us to make our own response.

it is my phone and i paid for it with my money and i cant change her rude response . is apple this rude always. just let me change it if i want to.

So I am also glad it’s not just my Siri responding rude like all the time but when I ask her to retype a text she repeats it but won’t retype it unless I literally yell at her with curse words

likewise, it is dumb and difficult to hear sometimes. What was wrong with the way it was? Maybe Apple will have gotten the message(s) and the next update will allow the user to customize, or even go back as it was.

I hate how Siri responds with Uh-hum, is so rude and not polite, Apple should allow user to change how it responds with something more polite like Hello.

This is beyond irritating. The best one I’ve found is South African female, a quick little “Hm?”
I also cannot stand the annoying uh huh reply, A simple yes would be much better and professional as an ‘assistant’

I am so annoyed with this iphone 13 SIRI. It is so disrespectful to answer uh huh or mmmmm? My kids are not allowed. Manners out the window.

Just bought a new phone (13) after having a (7) for 10 years and I did enjoy Siri until now.
This uh-huh and hmmm grunts are not sitting well with me. I tried to do the fix stated above and that does not work! I am over it!

I'm also in the 'uh-huh is rude' camp. I said "Hey Siri" and she responded with "uh-huh" just now. I replied "Do not respond with uh-huh, it's rude." She seemed to acknowledge it by saying "okay, let me know if there's anything else I can help you with." This is iOS 15.5 on an iPhone 12 Pro, FWIW.

The day I have to bend my will to AI, and not the other way 'round, is the day I start banging rocks together like a neanderthal...

I am adding my two cents here. I cannot stand the Uh-huh response. Siri is not my friend.

I can see MANY people are annoyed by the dumb “uh huh” reply. Sooooooooo annoying.

uh huh is such an irritating disrespectful sound! Come on Apple and change this back to simple english words such as Yes or How can I help you? !!!

I don’t care about it being “rude”i care that she interrupts me!! I miss when it just had a ping to tell me she was on and listening…
I didn’t have this problem until I updated my phone.

I think it’s kind of ridiculous y’all are so offended by her being casual but it’s the way she waits just the right amount of time to interrupt what you’re saying..

OMG! I HATE the uh hmmm......I can't make it stop, I've tried:( May be time to switch back to Android.

I was at an Apple Store for someone to actually fix my phone to have Siri say uh-huh! If you prefer for Siri NOT to say anything all she said all I needed to do is not pause. My Siri is again not saying uh-huh. I have to go back, I like hearing it, I NEED to hear it. As a caregiver, when my hands are full and the phone isn’t near me it’s helpful knowing when Siri is going to call someone should I need immediate help….. I’m sorry y’all don’t like it but remember, we all have different needs and opinions. Apple’s phone Tech support could NOT help turning it back on and I can’t remember it. Therefore Apple tech support may not be able to help you disable it either. (its a specific setting in the phone, try going to a store, see if a tech can go into your phone settings and turn it off)

PLEASE Fix the "UH Huh" I cannot stand it!!!!!!!!!!
We are not ALL teenagers Apple!

I asked Siri “when I say Hey Siri, please answer with yes”.
Siri’s response was “No”
Truly! I took a screen shot to show my son.
I certainly don’t want to put up with uh huh until I upgrade to the left phone. It’s like have a distracted teenager answer my queries.
I think it may finally be time to get a non apple product.
