Siri Says “You’ll need to unlock your iPhone first” on iPhone/CarPlay/iOS 14.5 ?

when speaking to Siri through car play it is always asking to unlock the iPhone first , as you are speaking directly to the iPhone.  For Example while using CarPlay if you say “Hey Siri Open Garage” it was working fine but after updating to latest iOS eg iOS 14.5 Now Siri responds with “You’ll need to unlock your iPhone first”. This is very strange and annoying as you will have to unlock the iPhone eveytime which was never the case with earlier version of iOS.

Not Only Garage app but many apps are asking to unlock the iPhone eg it request to unlock the phone while running and asking to "Siri put this song on spotify", which is not really convenient.

The issue seems to with iOS 14 and all iPhone including iPhone 12 Pro Max/11/XS are reported to face this issue. So whenever driving and ask siri to call anyone it responds with you’ll need to unlock your iphone first.

How to fix Siri Says “You’ll need to unlock your iphone first”: iPhone 12 Pro Max/ 11/XS , 8/7 : iOS 14/iOS 14.5

Fix 1 : Make sure to give Access while iPhone is locked.

Make sure you have enabled the preference to use carPlay while locked in your iPhone. Most of the time it does, but you should cross check the permission of CarPlay. Some times a firware update may cause such software glitches and its better you should check setting once.

Give it access Settings > Face ID & Passcode > (Enter Passcode) > (scroll to bottom under ‘Allow access while locked’) Home Control and Siri (make sure there green) also turn on USB Accessories as well.

Fix 2:  Reset the iPhone

You can also try to reset the iPhone setting to default. Reset all settings (general>reset>reset all settings)  and set up Siri again, Make sure to  verify the Siri settings 'Listen for "Hey Siri" and 'Allow Siri When Locked' are turned on to see if will resolve this issue.

Fix 3: Update iPhone

If after trying above fix does not  help you than we recommend you to keep updating your iPhone to latest version of iOS as Apple keeps on fixing such issue in upcoming releases.
